Garden Design Tips – Organic Fertilizer

Posted on July 19, 2016 By

xwatering-large-garden.jpg.pagespeed.ic.E_iizxStz7I prefer the use of organic fertilizers due to all of its advantages. So what are the different types of organic fertilizers?

There are many and most are easily accessible so you can start gardening organically in no time. But it would be no fun for me to tell you about all of the ways to fertilize organically, so I am going to only tell about the disgusting methods.

When you peel an orange or a banana, don’t throw out the peels or leave them on the ground for someone to slip on because they can be used for compost! This compost serves as an excellent organic fertilizer. Compost protects against pest and diseases, is cost-effective, and helps with habitat restoration efforts.

Other food trimmings can be used in compost as well as yard trimmings, dryer lint, sawdust, and cotton rags among many others including ANIMAL MANURE. You read correctly, animal droppings provide important nutrients and in case you were wondering, human manure is included in this category. Although manure is a rather displeasing way to fertilize your plants,

5 Landscape Design Tips For Beginners

Posted on July 14, 2016 By

5-small-patio-design-tips-1I have recently been working on planning the new design of my front yard. Having previously been a horticulture specialist (in a past life), I knew where to start my research, but maybe others don’t. Here are my tips to designing a yard that not only compliments your home, but is also functional for your needs.

    1. Know your climate. You have to really know the climate you live in: average temperatures during the day and at night, what seasons (if any) does the area experience, how much rainfall does the area receive throughout the year, and does the climate include extreme temperatures (hot or cold, or both). You’ll want to find plants that tolerate the conditions in your specific climate.
    1. Watering. Is there, or will there be, a sprinkler system? Are you willing to go outside and water the yard (plants) every day? If the answer is no to these questions, and there isn’t an abundance of rain year-round, you’ll likely want to go with drought-tolerant plants. You’ll also want to look at each type of plant you

Designing a Rooftop Garden

Posted on February 2, 2017 By

Living and working in the city, while convenient and with its own benefits, can often prove to be rather stressful. Urban gardens of any kind can be a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of the city, but rooftop gardens take it a step further. Whether it’s for your own personal use or for employees in the workplace, a rooftop garden can provide an unparalleled space for relaxation and destressing. When designing a rooftop garden, we always bear in mind a few key ideas to ensure the end-result is the best one possible.

Space is always the most important factor. Start with that, consider what is possible and what is not. There may also be certain features that just aren’t viable at the heights roof gardens take you to, but there are also so many things that wouldn’t be possible on the ground. If you’re concerned about making the most of space, so are we, and there are ways to do that. While it is possible to install awnings, we recommend that smaller rooftops be as open as possible to create the illusion of space. Features like glass railings can help to further enhance

Three Design Tips for a Dog-Friendly Garden

Posted on July 13, 2016 By

After more than thirty years I can say that it is possible to have a well appointed garden and a happy dog too. Through trial and error, advice from nurserymen and master gardeners, and sharing ideas with gardening friends, I have learned about gardening with dogs. It isn’t too complicated, really.

I simply keep three things in mind. First, I begin with the end in mind. The yard and garden have to suit the needs of everyone in the family, including Lizzie, our dog. After all, she spends more time outside that we do. She needs a little open space to romp (so do we), a comfortable place in the sun tempered with a bit of shade (so do we), and she enjoys a cool drink on those warm summer nights… there seems to be a pattern here. OK, our dog pretty much enjoys most all the same garden features we do. But wait, we’re not quite done.

I’ve noticed that dogs rarely appreciate the fragility of those specimen plants the nurseries charge so much for. Nor do they appreciate artfully winding paths. Every dog I have known has taken the most direct route to her

Small Yard Landscaping Tips To Make Your Small Space More Inviting

Posted on July 6, 2016 By

One issue you may run into as a landscaper or someone trying to landscape their own yard is if the yard is too small, you’ll run into problems trying to figure out how to fill it. Many times it’ll seem like everything you add makes it even smaller.

So here are some tips for landscaping a small yard.

When an area is very small, such as an atrium, the first decision is whether or not it’s only to look at or if it can be used for dining, entertaining, or lounging. If you have two small areas, one can be devoted entirely to planting and the other for outdoor activities. If designed right, the space can turn out to be very welcoming and comfortable.

Using container plants, espaliers, vines, and hanging baskets are good ways of getting the maximum of greenery out of a small space. Dwarf shrubs like Wheelers dwarf tobira, compact nandina, red elf pyrocantha are great for small beds. Narrow upright plants like horsetail, foxtail fern, and cannas look great up against a coutyard wall.

Plants that are miniature versions of larger plants help achieve spacious quality.

Basic Landscape Design Tips For Beautiful Lawns And Gardens

Posted on June 17, 2016 By

Landscaping is an art. Like interior design, many people use their lawns to express who they are. A property’s exterior appearance is just as important as it looks inside. The earth is the landscaper’s canvas. Flowers, trees, hard-scaping, and water are the paintbrushes and tools that these artists use to express their individual tastes. Following simple landscaping tips makes it possible for anyone to build their dream garden.

When deciding on a landscape design it is important to take weather into consideration. Planting beautiful flowers in the summer does little good if they will all die in the winter and need to be replanted. Different plant species and types of landscaping will be required depending on where you live. Beautiful gardens and lawns should be as easy to maintain as they are aesthetically pleasing.

Gardens that are brimming with flowers are one of the most popular landscaping designs. Having a garden that is full of color and vibrancy is how most people measure the success of their yards. When planting flowers it is important to layer them in the terrain. If you have three rows of plants make sure that the shortest are in front and

Free Front Yard Landscaping Tips

Posted on June 12, 2016 By

I have been trying for approximately a year now to sell my house, but owing to the market still being rather bad, it does not look like that is planning to happen. So I am considering pulling the home out of the listings, making some improvements, and giving it another go a couple years in the future. I was hoping to move into a smaller location having a lower mortgage and property tax burden, but I guess I will survive like this for a minimum of a little while longer. For the time getting, I require to have some painters, plumbers, and electricians in here, and seem through some yard landscaping suggestions to brighten things up a bit.

I was truly hoping to get some front yard landscaping ideas just from driving around the neighborhood, but that’s not about to take place. It appears that persons around here only pay attention to the backyard — which I guess makes sense since that’s where they invest most of their time. Everyone has a deck having a barbecue grill, and some folks even have swimming pools, so we have a lot of nice backyards in the area. But everyone,

Landscaping Design Tips to Increase Your Home’s Value

Posted on June 4, 2016 By

First, you do not have to be an expert to have the best landscaping for your yard. Here are some basic landscaping design tips that will allow you to have the best yard, and even the gratification of building it yourself.

These are specifically tips and tricks that will assist you in creating your own landscaping environment even if you cannot do draft drawings. You may still need pencil and paper to assist you with developing your ideas, but overall you can do these with only a measuring tape, yarn, and maybe a few sticks from the yard.

Start your landscaping ideas from the outside and work in, this way you are not running out of space unexpectedly. As you design, consider where people will enter, if you will need or want to keep out children or animals, and what types of plants you will use.

Many people will take and map out sections for trees, if you have not bought the trees yet, remember that miniature trees can still get up to six feet tall, and shade can be more than triple that. In addition, while trees are wonderful pieces for a yard, they

Lawn Care Service For the Average Homeowner

Posted on May 29, 2016 By

When it comes to lawn care service, you likely fall into one of two categories. You approve of hiring a company to take care of the ins and outs of manicuring your yard, or you feel like that’s the job of the homeowner and it’s a job you take pride in doing. If you fall into the latter category, you should avail yourself of all the information you can when it comes to taking care of your yard. That includes knowing when to mow and how that decision affects the health of your grass.

Most people don’t give much thought to the time of day they mow their grass. This is often true of even a professional lawn care service, as they have a schedule to maintain and that means one or two yards will be mowed at the inappropriate time. What is this inappropriate time? Well, fortunately it’s the hottest time of the day, a time when most people don’t care to be out doing yard work anyway. Mowing the yard in the early afternoon, when the sun is beating down at its hottest, can actually put undue stress on the grass. It’s also unwise to

Yard Signs, Save Money By Designing Your Own

Posted on May 3, 2016 By

Yard Signs are used for many different purposes in order to get a message out or for advertising a business. They are an effective way for you to be able to do this is. When made properly, these can help you to get your message across to anyone that happens to be passing by. Depending upon the purpose for which you need them, however, there may be some that are better suited for your particular purposes. Here are some of the main reasons why people would use yard signs and the different options that are available for you to choose from.

One of the primary reasons why people would use a sign in the yard is to advertise their business. It really doesn’t even need to be seen at the location of the physical business, as many of us are now working with small businesses that are operating out of our homes. All that is really necessary is for you to have an effective message on the sign itself, as well as information that will allow the person to take further action. This can be things such as a website, phone number or even just an email

How To Start A Livery Yard In The UK

Posted on April 23, 2016 By

If you are in the position of buying or renting a yard, you may be thinking about starting a livery yard. Running a livery yard is a rewarding lifestyle.

Some of the perks are:

  • You’ll be surrounded by fellow horse lovers,
  • Your horse will have the companionship of his four-legged friends,
  • You can take advantage of trade discounts by bulk buying horsey sundries, such as hay, straw and worming medication,
  • Get it right and you will benefit from having a regular income.

Some of the disadvantages are:

  • You’ll be on call 24 hours a day for any horse related emergencies,
  • You’ll be responsible for the welfare of every horse on the yard, whether you own it or not,
  • You will probably have to deal with awkward clients, chase payments and deal with people who may have the opposite opinion to you on every aspect of horse care.

Before you embark on your new horsey enterprise, it may be worth brushing up on your knowledge of equine care. Many riding schools across the UK run certificated British Horse Society courses. It’s always nice to be able to pull out a certificate to prove that you know your

Yard Signs Case Study: The LawnScapers

Posted on April 13, 2016 By

Company History

Founded in 2006 by brothers Chris and Evan Lewis, The LawnScapers is a full-service lawn care company, offering both lawn maintenance and landscaping packages to the citizens of Greenville, South Carolina. Shortly after graduating from college, the twin brothers teamed up to form their business, which proved to be very successful due to low overhead and high-quality work. Running out of Chris’s home, The LawnScapers operates with a six-truck fleet and serves the entire city of Greenville.

Chris and Evan have been looking to expand to an actual office, but to do so requires a significant financial investment. Although the Lewises are willing to take a risk, they need to know that their business will continue to grow at a level that warrants the larger location.

Marketing Investment

For the first few years of the business’s existence, The LawnScapers advertised primarily through word-of-mouth and social-networking. This booked enough clients to keep the employees busy, but now that business is growing, Evan, who handles the marketing for the company, is looking for ways to expand the reach-advertising that makes good financial sense. Having turned down TV, radio, and even billboards because of budgetary

Beef Up Spring Revenue With This Often Forgotten Service

Posted on April 7, 2016 By

Over the past years landscape, cleaning and other service type companies have found hidden veins of income doing seasonal. Or location specific type jobs that people are willing to pay to have done rather than do themselves. Like me, many of my neighbors this past holiday season opted to pay a local landscape company to hang Christmas lights from my home. The $100 dollars I spent to have this done for me was well worth me not having to get out the ladder, fall off the roof, and I avoided freezing to death.

This is the third year I paid for this service. After the first year I started thinking about what other areas are available for service companies to make more money. I stumbled onto a huge one that has paid for my summer vacations now 2 years running…headstone cleaning on Memorial Day weekend!

This year I tried a different twist…

I made this “how to” guide and a website and marketed online this year hoping to add to my large profits in the headstone cleaning business. But what did I find? That people do not want to do this work themselves. It was

Finding the Right Lawn Service and Landscaping Company

Posted on April 1, 2016 By

What are some of the things you should consider before hiring a lawn service company? Do you want to hire the cheapest company? What kind of experience does the company have? How long have they been in business? Are they licensed and insured? Are there employees professional and people you feel safe around? When hiring a lawn care company that has the cheapest bid there is usually a reason why they are the cheapest. Many times they do not carry the proper insurance and workers compensation to protect you if someone was to get hurt on a landscape job on your property. Also, they probably have not invested in the equipment to get the job done right.

What kind of experience do they have is also a concern. You do not want to be the first yard that someone practices laying sod on. Believe it or not, laying sod correctly is just as fine of art as laying tile. Anyone can throw sod and dig some holes for plants. But doing these correctly makes all the difference.

How long have they been in the lawn care business is also important. They are more likely to know

Have a Wonderful Yard in No Time

Posted on March 23, 2016 By

Do you have those neighbors who never take care of their yard? If you do, it can be very annoying and frustrating when their yard is unkempt. When you spend a lot of your time caring for your yard and the house next to you looks awful then it makes you feel like you wasted your time and effort. Yes, schedules obviously get very busy and not everyone has time to keep up with the outside of your home as well as in but it may help to suggest to them a professional landscaper. Landscapers can do the dirty work such as weeding, mow the grass, install a brick patio, plant flower beds, all the things you do not have time to do.

These professionals can add to all of the work that you put into your yard. You have to keep up with the cutting of the grass and the watering of the flowers, but if you really want your yard to look great, hiring a landscaper is the perfect thing to do. Every backyard or front yard has grass and trees, but not everyone has a pond, deck or swimming pool. A good yard service
